Roberto Clemente was born in Barrio
San Anton in Carolina, Puerto Rico, August 18, 1934. Roberto enjoyed
track and field. His favorite love and passion was with baseball.
He played amateur baseball with Juncos Double A Club. He then played
with the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Winter League. After
Santurce, Roberto signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was assigned to
play for the Montreal Royals.
Roberto went to the Pittsburgh Pirates
in 1954 as a number one draft. He joined the Pirates in 1955 and
spent eighteen years with this team (1955-1972.) Roberto had the
chance to experience two World Series in 1960 and in 1971. He obtained
the National League Batting Champion award four times, was awarded twelve
Gold Gloves, and selected National League MVP in 1966 and chosen MVP in
the 1971 World Series.
On December 31, 1972, Roberto died
in a tragic plane crash. There had been an earthquake in Nicaragua
and Roberto was determined to take food, medical, and clothing supplies
to the victims of this earthquake. His plane went down off the coast
of Puerto Rico due to poor weather.
